The 7 wonders of the walk – Day 2- Golegā – Tomar

Today’s walk started early – 4.45 am! It was another long one (about 32 km) around small villages and forests of eucalyptus before arriving in Tomar, a town that used to be Templar’s territory.

I won’t try to rewrite all I was told by the very knowledgable hostel manager, but it used to be a very affluent and spiritual place.

1st wonder-a kitty in a house with wacky curtains

2 nd wonder- La Quinta da Cardiga. A building that used to belong to the Templars and is still maintained and used while all the other buildings around are falling to bits and make the place look like a ghost town

Wonder No 3 – some very interesting way of showing the Camino. It’s a miracle that I found my way around.

Wonder No 4

An old chapel that got destroyed while the Portuguese were fighting between traditionalists and progressivists.

Wonder No 5

The main Church in Atalaia, declared national monument… quite an achievement.

Wonder No 6

The Convent of Christ in Tomar Cristo/Mosteiro de Cristo) is a former Roman Catholic convent in Tomar, Portugal. Originally a 12th-century Templar stronghold, when the order was dissolved in the 14th century the Portuguese branch was turned into the Knights of the Order of Christ, that later supported Portugal’s maritime discoveries of the 15th century. The convent and castle complex is a historic and cultural monument and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritagesite in 1983.

Thank you Wikipedia

Tomar – the city… enjoy!
